Carlos Clanton at Community Violence Intervention Conference

In our journey towards a safer Norfolk, reimagining public safety stands as a cornerstone of Carlos Clanton's vision for our community. The recent surge in violence, both locally and nationally, has underscored the urgent need for innovative solutions. Carlos Clanton is committed to addressing this issue head-on, focusing on community-centered approaches that prioritize prevention and intervention.

Carlos recently attended the Community Violence Intervention Conference hosted by the Gabby Giffords Foundation in Los Angeles, CA. This conference brought together leaders and experts dedicated to finding effective strategies to reduce violence and build safer communities. Carlos's participation in this event highlights his dedication to learning from successful models and implementing them here in Norfolk.

The conference emphasized the critical role of violence intervention groups in mitigating community violence. These groups work tirelessly to mediate conflicts, provide support to at-risk individuals, and foster environments where safety and healing can thrive. In Norfolk, Carlos plans to collaborate with such groups to enhance their impact and reach. By supporting local organizations that are already making a difference, we can create a comprehensive network of safety and support.

Carlos Clanton currently serves as the Executive Director of the Friends of the Portsmouth Juvenile Court, Inc., where he works with area youth to provide mentoring, exposure, and guidance to steer them away from violence and open their eyes to other possibilities in their lives. His hands-on experience with youth intervention programs has given him unique insights into effective prevention strategies that can be scaled to benefit the wider Norfolk community.

As reported in a recent article by The Virginian-Pilot, violence intervention groups are a vital part of the solution to the escalating violence we face. These groups have shown that with the right resources and community backing, it is possible to reduce violent incidents significantly. Carlos's vision aligns with this approach, advocating for increased funding and support for these essential programs.

Carlos Clanton’s commitment to public safety goes beyond traditional policing. He believes in a holistic approach that includes mental health support, youth engagement, and community empowerment. One of his key prevention measures is the establishment of a mental health team within the Norfolk Police Department. This team would be specially trained to deploy during mental health disturbances, ensuring that individuals in crisis receive the appropriate care and intervention needed to prevent escalation.

Additionally, Carlos aims to foster stronger collaboration between the police department, city social and human service agencies, and nonprofit organizations. By working together more effectively, these entities can strengthen the safety net for residents experiencing crises, ensuring they receive the support and resources necessary to overcome their challenges.

One of the key takeaways from the Community Violence Intervention Conference was the importance of community involvement. Carlos is a strong advocate for community-led initiatives, recognizing that those who live in our neighborhoods are best positioned to understand and address their unique challenges. His plans include establishing a Community Safety Task Force, comprising local leaders, activists, and residents, to develop tailored solutions for our city.

Carlos Clanton's vision for reimagining public safety is not just about reducing crime statistics; it’s about creating a community where everyone feels safe and valued. By leveraging the knowledge gained from the Community Violence Intervention Conference and working closely with local violence intervention groups, Carlos is dedicated to building a safer Norfolk.

Join Carlos Clanton in this mission to reimagine public safety in our city. Together, we can create a Norfolk where every resident has the opportunity to thrive in a safe and supportive environment.
