Carlos Clanton's journey from a hopeful young man to a respected leader within Norfolk and beyond illustrates how unwavering dedication, strategic community engagement, and a passion for service can foster significant change. Born and raised in the heart of Norfolk, in the Lambert's Point and Park Place communities, Carlos emerged as a beacon of hope and resilience. The eldest of three siblings raised by a single mother, he became proof that determination and a desire for improvement can transcend statistical limitations.

 

His path of transformation began with his pivotal role as the Director of the Norfolk Division of the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce. Carlos broke barriers as the first African American to head this historic institution, setting a new precedent and laying a solid foundation for his enduring commitment to stimulating business growth and community development. This role was not just a job but the stepping stone that showcased Carlos's leadership prowess and potential to enact significant change.

 

Carlos expanded his influence on Norfolk's educational system by progressing naturally to the Executive Director of the Office of Community Engagement and Strategic Partnerships. He significantly enhanced the educational landscape through innovative programs and partnerships, benefiting students, teachers, and the community. His efforts did not go unnoticed, as evidenced by his recognition as one of Hampton Roads' Top 20 under 30 African American Leaders and a Top 40 under 40 awardee. These honors reflect not only his professional achievements but also his deep-seated commitment to service and excellence.

 

Building on this foundation of leadership and service, Carlos also dedicated himself to the educational governance of his community. He was elected and subsequently re-elected as a member of the Norfolk City School Board, where he held pivotal roles as both Board Chair and Vice Chair. His leadership in these positions underscored his commitment to improving educational outcomes and governance within the Norfolk school system.

 

Carlos serves as the Chair of the Governor's School for the Arts Regional Board of Governors. He has been a SECEP (Southeastern Cooperative Educational Programs) Regional Board member since 2018. These roles highlight his ongoing commitment to arts and special education, demonstrating his broad approach to enhancing educational opportunities for all students.

 

Beyond education, Carlos's community engagement extends to significant roles with the Visit Norfolk Board of Directors and Executive Committee and as a member of the Tidewater Council of the Boy Scouts of America. Each position reflects his commitment to promoting Norfolk as a vibrant city for visitors and supporting the development of young people through scouting.

 

In addition to these roles, Carlos is a proud member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Alpha Lambda Chapter, where he has held several roles at the local chapter, District, and international levels within the fraternity. His involvement with Alpha Phi Alpha exemplifies his commitment to brotherhood, leadership development, and community service, further showcasing the depth and breadth of his dedication to positive societal impact.

 

Carlos's dedication to fostering an inclusive and equitable society was further demonstrated through his involvement in the Governor's Commonwealth Commission on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and his receipt of the Humanitarian Award from the Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities. These accolades speak volumes of his commitment to addressing systemic issues and promoting positive societal change.

 

In his quest for a seat on the Norfolk City Council - Superward 7, Carlos brings a wealth of experience from various leadership roles across non-profit organizations, association leadership, and organization management. His campaign platform underscores the principles of experienced leadership, the significance of service, and the value of teamwork—tenets that have steered his career path and promise to guide his governance approach.

 

Carlos Clanton's story further unfolds through his significant roles, such as the Sr. Director of Community Engagement and Education at the Hampton Roads Community Action Program, the Vice President of Advancement and Workforce Development at STOP Inc., and currently, as the Executive Director of the Friends of the Portsmouth Juvenile Court, Inc. Each position has allowed him to lead transformative projects that bolster community resilience, advance economic stability, and support the professional development of community members.

 

Moreover, as the 9th President of the National Urban League Young Professionals, Carlos positioned himself at the forefront of one of America's most historic civil rights organizations. This role and his tenure as a former Trustee of the National Urban League Board of Trustees highlight his commitment to social justice, equity, and empowering young professionals and underserved communities nationwide.
