Norfolk Councilman Carlos J. Clanton Appointed to the National League of Cities’ Race, Equity and Leadership Council
Norfolk, VA—Carlos J. Clanton, Councilman for Superward 7 in Norfolk, Virginia, has been appointed to the National League of Cities (NLC) 2025 Race, Equity and Leadership (REAL) Council. Councilman Clanton was elected to a one-year term, and he will help shape national equity-centered initiatives alongside other local elected officials from across the country. The appointment was announced by NLC President Steve Patterson, Mayor of Athens, Ohio.
"As a proud son of Norfolk and a lifelong advocate for equity, I am deeply honored to serve on the REAL Council. This appointment allows me to ensure Norfolk’s voice is heard as we develop strategies that build more inclusive, resilient, and just communities, locally and nationally," said Councilman Clanton.
As a member of the REAL Council, Clanton will collaborate with a diverse group of municipal leaders to foster innovation, share best practices, and advance racial equity through policy and programming that can be replicated in communities across the U.S.
“It is crucial that we bring together local leaders that are representative of all communities to share solutions and challenges from their hometowns, which are used to develop NLC policies and programs,” said NLC President Steve Patterson. “Bringing the experience and leadership of Councilman Clanton to serve on NLC’s REAL Council this year goes a long way to ensuring every city, town, and village has the resources they need to lift up their communities and improve the lives of their residents.”
This year’s REAL Council leadership includes Chair Andrea Barefield, Councilmember, Waco, TX; Vice Chair Diana Perez, Councilmember, Vancouver, WA; and Vice Chair Timothy Lonergan, Vice Mayor, Oakland Park, FL.
