Important USPS Postmark Change — Please Read Before Mailing Deadlines

Dear Superward 7 Resident,
I want to make you aware of an important change recently implemented by the U.S. Postal Service that could impact time-sensitive mail, including tax payments, ballots, legal filings, and other documents with strict deadlines.
Effective December 24, 2025, USPS postmarks may now reflect the day your mail is processed at a postal facility, rather than the day you drop it off in a mailbox or lobby drop slot. This processing can occur one to two days after drop-off, potentially causing mailed items to appear late even if they were mailed on time.
What This Means for You
• Dropping mail off on a deadline day may not guarantee a same-day postmark
• This change is especially important for documents that require proof of mailing by a specific date
How to Protect Yourself
✔️ Mail important items several days early
✔️ If you need proof of same-day mailing, go inside the post office and
✔️ Request a manual (hand-stamped) postmark at the counter
Please take a moment to share this information with neighbors, seniors, and anyone who relies on mailed documents to meet important deadlines.
As always, thank you for staying informed and engaged. My office remains committed to sharing timely updates that impact our community.
Warm regards,
Councilman Carlos Clanton
Norfolk City Council, Superward 7
