Regarding SNAP Benefits: The following update regarding federal benefits is provided on behalf of the City Manager.
The Governor of Virginia has declared a State of Emergency in response to the potential lapse of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits beginning November 1, should the federal government shutdown not be resolved by October 28.
The Virginia Department of Social Services (VDSS) has confirmed that October SNAP benefits have been disbursed as scheduled and continues to enroll eligible individuals in SNAP and other public assistance programs.
Under this State of Emergency, the Commonwealth of Virginia will provide food benefits to residents until Congress passes a new budget and the federal shutdown ends.
Locally, Norfolk’s Department of Human Services (DHS) is actively working with clients to prepare for this situation. SNAP recipients are encouraged to use any remaining October benefits carefully, focusing on purchasing non-perishable and essential food items.
Residents are urged to stay informed by visiting the City of Norfolk Department of Human Services webpage at www.norfolk.gov/HumanServices and following the City’s official social media channels for the latest updates.
DHS is also collaborating with community partners, including the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore, to ensure resources are available for those who may be affected.
More information will be provided as it becomes available.
Together, we remain committed to supporting Norfolk residents and families during this challenging time.
