Honoring Our Past, Building Our Future: Kicking Off Black History Month

As we enter February, we begin Black History Month, a time to reflect on Black Americans' resilience, brilliance, and contributions throughout history. But this month is more than just a celebration—it is a reminder that Black history is American history, shaping our nation's policies, culture, and progress.
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.” His words remind us that justice and equality are not inevitable but require collective commitment and action. In a time when the national tenor of intolerance threatens to divide us, it is more important than ever to come together as a community—to acknowledge our differences, yes, but to embrace what unites us.
Coming Together to Build a Stronger Norfolk
From serving on the Norfolk School Board to leading as a national civil rights leader and former President of the National Urban League Young Professionals to now representing Superward 7 on Norfolk City Council, I have witnessed the power of unity firsthand. When communities work together, we foster opportunity, inclusion, and progress for all.
As your councilman, I focus on Bridging, Building, and Empowering Our Neighborhoods.
That means:
Investing in education ensures every child can access quality schools and pathways to success.
Creating economic opportunities that uplift Black businesses and historically underserved communities.
Ensuring public safety while advocating for policies that promote fairness and community trust.
Strengthening our neighborhoods so all families feel safe, valued, and empowered to thrive.
A Call to Action: Unite, Celebrate, and Engage
This Black History Month, let us reflect on the past and recommit ourselves to building a more inclusive future. I encourage everyone to:
Learn about the Black leaders who have shaped Norfolk and our nation.
Support Black-owned businesses and organizations that drive economic empowerment.
Engage in meaningful conversations and actions that bring us together as a community.
We are at our strongest when we stand together—when we see our diversity as a strength rather than a division. Norfolk’s future is built on unity, shared purpose, and the belief that everyone has value. Let us use this Black History Month as a time to renew that spirit, lift each other, and continue the work of building a better tomorrow—together.

In service,
Councilman Carlos Clanton
Norfolk City Council, Superward 7
