Junetheenth Freedom Day

Today, we come together to celebrate Juneteenth, a day that commemorates the emancipation of the last enslaved African Americans in the United States. This day, June 19, 1865, symbolizes a pivotal moment in our nation's history—a moment when freedom was finally extended to all, marking the end of a dark chapter and the beginning of a new era of hope, resilience, and progress.

Juneteenth is more than a celebration of freedom; it is a reminder of the enduring spirit of those who fought tirelessly for justice and equality. It is a day to reflect on our past, acknowledge the struggles and achievements of our ancestors, and renew our commitment to building a more just and equitable society.

As a former national civil rights leader and past President of the National Urban League Young Professionals, my commitment to advocacy has been unwavering. Through my involvement with the National Urban League, the Urban League of Hampton Roads, and my current role on the Norfolk City School Board, I have dedicated my life to fighting for equality and empowering our communities.

I want to affirm my dedication to being your advocate on the Norfolk City Council. I believe in the power of community and the importance of representation that truly reflects the diverse voices and experiences of our city. My campaign is built on the principles of enhancing public safety, investing in our neighborhoods, fostering economic growth, ensuring affordable housing, and improving environmental resilience.

Juneteenth teaches us that progress is possible through collective effort and unwavering determination. As your council member, I will work relentlessly to ensure that the values of freedom, equality, and justice are at the forefront of our city's policies and initiatives. Together, we can create a Norfolk that honors its history while paving the way for a brighter, more inclusive future.

Let's celebrate Juneteenth with pride and purpose, knowing that each step we take today brings us closer to the realization of our shared dreams for tomorrow.

Thank you for your support, and let’s continue to make history together.
