In the spirit of Throwback Thursday, let's rewind the tape to 1996—a landmark year when Carlos Clanton made history. As a sophomore at Norfolk Maury High School, he broke new ground by becoming the first African American male to serve as State President of the Virginia Technology Student Association (TSA), a pivotal co-curricular student organization.

Representing over 75,000 students across Virginia, Carlos's journey with TSA began thanks to his middle school technology teacher, Mr. Ricky Ross, at Blair Middle School. The association was more than a student body to him; it was a gateway to a series of "firsts." From his first regional to statewide and national competitions, to his first time traveling overnight without his mom or flying on an airplane—TSA was the backdrop for these significant milestones.

Beyond the competitions and travels, TSA was instrumental in honing Carlos's leadership skills. He attributes a significant part of his development to his high school Materials Technology Teacher and TSA Advisor, MCPON Duane R. Bushey, ret. Mr. Bushey was not just a mentor but a pivotal figure who instilled in him a profound sense of duty and service to others.

Carlos's TSA experience has been a cornerstone in his life, providing him with invaluable skills and a dedication that he carries into his present endeavors. As a TSA alumnus, he returns each year to coordinate the Virginia Tech Bowl competition, inspiring middle and high school students across the Commonwealth.

His commitment reflects his belief in paying it forward, knowing firsthand the impact that TSA, his advisors, and these experiences had on him. In Carlos's own words, "I know what TSA, my advisors, and this experience did for me. It's only right I pay it forward to our next generation learning to lead in a technical world."

Carlos's story is a testament to his campaign motto, "Shaped by Service. Committed to Community." His history with the TSA is not just a memory; it's a continuous drive that shapes his vision for service and community in Norfolk.
