🌡️ Extreme Heat Warning in Effect for Norfolk — Cooling Stations Now Open

Important Announcement

The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Heat Warning for Norfolk and the surrounding areas, in effect from 10:00 AM Monday through 8:00 PM Wednesday. This alert activates the City of Norfolk’s Extreme Heat Plan, and I want to ensure every resident knows the resources available to stay safe.

Forecasts predict that actual temperatures will hover around 100°F, but the heat index, which is what it feels like, could climb as high as 112°F during peak afternoon hours. This type of heat poses serious risks to public health, including heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and even heatstroke.

To help our community stay safe and cool, the City has opened Cooling Stations at multiple public library branches throughout Norfolk. These locations are air-conditioned, open to the public, and stocked with complimentary bottled water to provide much-needed relief from the extreme heat.

Anchor Branch Libraries:

Neighborhood Branches:

Each of these locations will serve as a safe and comfortable space for residents who need a break from the heat, without any questions asked.

Additionally, Emergency Management has provided free bottled water to all the Cooling Stations locations.

✅ What You Can Do:

  • Drink plenty of water — even if you don’t feel thirsty.

  • Take frequent breaks if you’re working or playing outside.

  • Wear light-colored, breathable clothing to stay cool.

  • Check on elderly neighbors, family members, and others who may not have access to air conditioning.

  • Never leave children or pets in a parked car — even for a minute.

  • Bring pets inside during the hottest part of the day and ensure they have cool water and shade.

Together, we can take care of one another during this period of extreme heat. Please spread the word, and if you or someone you know needs a place to cool off, don’t hesitate to use these resources.
