This morning, I proudly took my oath of office, officially becoming Councilman-Elect for Superward 7!
As required by City Code Sec. 133, I have fulfilled my obligation to qualify for office by taking my oath within 10 days of the November 15th certification of my election. The City Code clearly states that failure to take these steps within the allotted time would result in forfeiting the position and creating a vacancy—but I am committed to meeting my responsibilities and serving our community.
One of my former opponents has officially filed for a recount. However, this action does not interfere with my ability or obligation to meet the requirements set forth in the City Code. The recount will involve reviewing votes that have already been counted, which resulted in me leading by 92 votes after three separate counts:
Election Night results,
4 days post-election, when my lead increased,
November 15, 2024, when the Norfolk Electoral Board certified the election.
I was the only candidate to observe the final count, during which all campaigns had the opportunity to participate. This final count led to the Norfolk Electoral Board officially certifying my election.
As of today, I am Councilman-Elect for Superward 7, and I will continue working to ensure a smooth transition into my new role. Over the coming weeks, I’ll be focused on preparing to hit the ground running on January 1, 2025, so I can fully support our neighbors and tackle the issues that matter most to our communities.
Additionally, I am excited to announce that I will host a public Oath of Office Ceremony in January to celebrate this milestone with all of you. More details will be shared soon, and I hope you will join me!
Thank you to everyone who made their voices heard in this election. I look forward to working with and for you to build a better Norfolk!
— Carlos Clanton, Councilman-Elect, Superward 7
